On Friday evening it was reported by the family that Biz Markie had passed away at the age of 57 with his wife and family by his side. Biz Markie was a rap legend and was known most famously for his song ‘Just a Friend.’

A representative of the family said in an official statement “We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time. Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years.”

Biz had been a hip hop pioneer, having released 5 albums which include, 1988’s Goin’ Off and 1989’s The Biz Never Sleeps, Biz created his own sound and style like nobody else. Nicknamed the ‘Clown of Hip Hop’ he was known for his music to be very different, mixing rap and singing which was sometimes off-key.

Biz was labelled as a one-hit-wonder as his song ‘Just a Friend’ but his career went beyond that one song, and still makes an impact today. Biz was not only a rapper, he was in films like Men In Black II playing a small but significant part to those who recognized him.

Biz leaves behind his wife Tara who released a statement, “We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time.”

Our prayers go out to Biz, his family, and his friends, all who have lost someone with such a vibrant personality.
