Mani Jassal releases ‘Unleashed’ the new collection inspired by the pandemic, a time where the human spirit overcame challenged and embraced change, reinvention and self-expression. Mani Jassal took this opportunity as a way to rethink and make changes that were meaningful.
These changes included going season-less, which brings on a sense of fashion and style that is year-round, which created a deeper commitment to greater equity and inclusion in the fashion industry.
Mani Jassal is a luxury designer in bridal and evening wear that is based in Toronto, Canada. Since 2014 Mani founded the company to celebrate women, and the multiple layers that come with their identities. Mani was born in Punjab, India and at a young age moved to Canada, from then she went on to study fashion at Ryerson University, which lead her to launch her first collection which was inspired by South Asian fashion. In this collection, Mani took the challenge of replacing the traditional heavy beading and turned the heavy looks into a lightweight and very unique silhouettes.
Power, courage and identity are the main pillars behind the ‘Unleashed’ collection, in this 78 piece collection, you can see, understand and celebrate the modern woman. Behind the design is a woman lead team, designed in Canada, which uses bold colours, sheer overlays, hot pants and lucknowi fabrics. Lucknowi fabrics have ‘chikan’ embroidered on them which is one of the most luxurious embroideries in India. Mani used tradition to associate with certain fabrics to juxtapose the non-traditional designs of the looks created.
“Cher Slinky Dress”- an asymmetric statement party dress with mirrored embroidery work that transcends through the seasons and features, detachable puff-sleeves and unconventional bold cuts.
“Sapphire Scorpius Mini Set” – which features a boxy denim jacket made of traditional Lucknowi fabric and a mini skirt with a shorter silhouette, perfect for the woman who needs a break from the party and dance floor.
“Naomi Knot Top x Naomi Sari Slit Skirt” – a vibrant one-of-a-kind, an off-the-shoulder design that brings fantasy to life with its cascading floral appliqués, sheer ruffles and sexy slit!
The brand has always had influences that may have to seem complicated to incorporate into their lines. For Mani, it was important to have a balance of ethnic and everyday wardrobe in each collection, including ‘Unleashed’. The collection has ways of not being culturally specific but still bring the unorthodox cut and designs together to create clothes that prioritize quality and comfort but also allow for the rebellious woman to choose how she wants to express herself, strengthen herself and also reflect and honour their cultural identity at the same time.
