Montreal based outerwear brand, Kanuk, celebrates its 50th anniversary with the Heritage collection – a series of four limited-edition coats inspired by the brand’s archival styles and made with the Canadian mastery of winter warmth.
Our nation’s hidden gem, Kanuk, has been meticulously crafting the warmest outerwear in Canada from a small factory in the heart of Montréal since the 1970s. While our French-speaking neighbours well revere Kanuk’s unparalleled craftsmanship, the brand only recently made its introduction to the national and international markets. All of Kanuk’s product designs are born of the environment and carefully architected to protect against nature’s extreme weather conditions. Given the lasting quality of Kanuk garments, the styles of yesterday and today intermingle seamlessly to create warm, beautiful, and durable coats.
The Heritage collection pays homage to Kanuk’s archival pieces and original, cult-favourite designs and continues their legacy of quality-crafted outerwear.
“We’re excited to return to Kanuk’s heritage and vintage styles in celebration of the 50th anniversary,” said Kanuk’s Co-Chief Creative Officer, Annie Horth. “The designer and I were inspired by the coats’ generous volumes that have since become the brand’s signature. Extreme care was taken with all details from the stand-up collar with the owl prominently featured inside, to the bevelled pockets and resistant materials using ripstop nylon.”
With an unwavering commitment to protection from the elements, each coat is made with Kanuk Thermo + insulation engineered for maximum warmth and humidity performance and coated with DWR (Durable Water Repellent), a microporous lamination that is waterproof, wind-resistant and maintains breathability. Inspired by function and crafted for form, the series is comprised of two men’s and two women’s outerwear pieces.
Menswear
TAÏGA: Take winter in stride with the superior thermal efficiency and upbeat styling of this loose-fitting, thigh-length parka. Taiga’s exterior shell is crafted from Kanuk’s windproof 100% polyester memory fabric and features a two-way zipper with a snap-shut placket, drawcord at the waist, and an attached sherpa-lined hood to seal out drafts. The coat retails for $890 CAD, and sizes range from XXS to XL. The Taiga is available in four colours: Black, Aviator, Khaki, and Blue Black.
TOUNDRA: This thigh-length parka takes on -30°C with its windproof, waterproof ripstop shell. The adjustable hood and sherpa tucked inside the collar and elastic wrist cuffs provide comfort from the cold, while the four-hand pockets enhance its vintage styling. The coat retails for $890 CAD, and sizes range from XXS to XXL. The Toundra is available in four colours: Navy, Sand, Taupe, and Balad Blue.
Womenswear:
EXPLORATRICE: Walk confidently into winter with this coat featuring semi-shine technical fabric, and a vintage styling that is loose-fitting and above the knee in length. The sherpa and adjustable hood inside the collar, adjustable waist and bottom, and front placket with snap-tight collar keep you snug and warm at -30°C. The coat retails for $900 CAD, and sizes range from XXS to XL. The Exploratrice is available in three colours: Navy, Cypress, and Balad Blue.
TYPHA: This loose-fitting, hip-length coat greets the cold with maximum warmth-for-the-weight insulation, featuring a waterproof and windproof exterior with retro styling. The two-way zipper with a snap-shut placket, a hood tucked into the collar, sherpa, and a cinched waist keep out the cold while large zippered hand pockets complete the look. The coat retails for $895 CAD and sizes range from XXS to XL. The Typha is available in four colours: Navy, Wheat, Balad Blue, and Red.
