As we know February is just around the corner and the much-anticipated Motionball Gala is upon us once again. This non-profit organization builds awareness and raises funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, (SOCF) making powerful and meaningful difference in the lives of so many, for generations to come.

This year’s event kicks off February 7th at Liberty Grand,  where they welcome 2,500 young professionals, celebrities and Special Olympian athletes to the opulent event to raise 300,000 for the Special Olympic Canada Foundation.

With “themed” parties comes questions; what do I wear? What’s considered 20’s? Where do I get something like this? What is too much, or over the top? These are just some of the questions that run through our heads as we prepare for any theme styled event.

So we wanted to take the guessing and or stressing out, and help answer some of the questions you may have. I sat down with Celebrity stylist; Julianne Costigan, some of whose clients include, Jessica Mulroney, and Bianca Andreescu on what to wear to a roaring 20’s themed party and be a showstopper.

What does one wear to a 20’s themed party?

When attending a themed party, there’s a fine line between hitting the theme while still looking modern, without looking like you’re wearing a costume. I usually look to trends of the era that could be found in stores today (i.e. feathers, dropped waistlines, pearls, head pieces etc).

What is a signature piece that is a must for the ladies (i.e. hat, gloves, pearls)?

Find an accessory that touches on the ‘20s — a headband, a fringe bag or a pair of pearl earrings. I always look to accessories when I’m going to an event that has a theme – they’re a great way to get a ‘20s-inspired look without having to make a big investment.

What is a signature piece that’s a must for the men?

A three-piece suit, a pocket watch, a comb over or all three!

Sometimes we tend to go over the top or not enough, what is your advice on hitting the look just right?

To hit the theme just right, try to look for a combination of ’20s inspired pieces paired with on-trend, current fashion items. Find inspiration in trends that you’re seeing in stores like slip dresses, tassel earrings or pearl headbands. The key is to interpret the trends in an updated way by wearing them with modern pieces, so you don’t look like you’re wearing a costume.

If someone was to decide to attend Motionball last minute with not a lot of time to shop, how could they pull this look together with some pieces in their closet?

Almost everyone has pearls in their closet in some form, whether they are earrings, a necklace or a headband. Another great piece that evokes the style of the ‘20s is responsible fur — whether it’s a coat, a collar or a shawl, fur is a great way to transition a classic evening look to fit the theme of the event.

What are some places to shop in Toronto to find these looks?

Some of my top picks are:

Fitzroy Dress Rental

Nordstrom

Hudson’s Bay

Honey

Hopefully now, you have a better idea of what to wear to the upcoming gala.
