As our children get older, their likes and preferences are going to change. They’ll grow out of some things and realize they like others. Even their favorite colors might change. This is all part of growing up, and if you think back to your own childhood, you’ll know it’s true; the same thing happened to you.

That means that, among other things, your child’s bedroom is going to need to be updated once in a while. As they grow out of their old toys and games and so on, their bedroom needs to grow with them; it’s the ideal symbol of gaining independence and showing that you understand they’re getting older. So with that in mind, here are some things you can do to update your child’s bedroom.

Change The Wall Color

One of the first things you should do if you’re updating your child’s bedroom is to change the wall color. It might be that they have a bright color on the walls, as that’s something children are usually drawn to, or perhaps they have wallpaper covered in dinosaurs or fairies or other fun, but young, designs. If that’s the case, it’s time to remove all that and replace it with a nice, neutral color that can serve as the ideal canvas for their own ideas as they work out what it is they want their bedroom to look like.

Using neutral colors like cream or gray is a great option. It means the wall becomes a great backdrop to have anything else on or around it that you want. That could mean cushions and rugs with bright colors and patterns, for example, or even posters (teenagers are particularly fond of posters). By removing the old and allowing some self-expression with the new, your child’s room will get an easy update.

Put Up Shelving

Shelving is another great way to update your child’s bedroom. You can use shelving to store anything at all, from books to the old toys they want to keep to prizes from school and so much more, and when opt for unique and attractive shelving, you’ll bring the tone and style of the room up to another level. There are so many options to choose from that you’re sure to find something that works, whether it’s reclaimed wood, a bright color, or anything else.

The great thing about shelving is that it takes things that would be been scattered about or piled up on the floor and gives them a space to ‘live’. The bedroom then becomes a lot neater, and your child can enjoy the space all the more.

Choose New Bedding

Although the bedding you use isn’t technically a part of your bedroom’s decor, in reality, many people use it as exactly that – it can complement the wall color or the scheme of the room, or it can be used as a great contrast if you prefer.

Plus, the bedding you opt for is one excellent way to show off your taste and personality. Your child might not have their toys all around anymore, but if they’re particularly keen on a certain band or TV show or if they love a piece of musical theater or anything else, there’s sure to be bedding that allows them to be themselves.
