Haven’t you heard? Micro-cations are the hottest travel hack right now, letting you explore your favourite cities in just a single day—yes, flying in and out all in one whirlwind trip.
Micro-cations are quickly becoming one of the biggest travel trends of the year—and for good reason.
These quick, in-and-out trips are redefining the way we explore, making it easier than ever to experience a new city without committing to a full vacay. According to Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks Report, more travellers are opting for these short getaways as a flexible, cost-effective way to satisfy their wanderlust. After putting the concept to the test myself with a whirlwind trip to NYC, I can see exactly why they’re having a moment.
NYC Micro-cation Experience
In my experience, micro-cations are the best way to experience your favourite city through intentional travel. We prioritized a mix of sightseeing, viral foodie stops, and shopping to make the most of our time in NYC for the day—and safe to say, it delivered. While flying in and out in a single day might sound a little chaotic (and maybe slightly unrealistic), it’s actually totally doable, and even more fun than you’d expect.
The key? A little prep work definitely goes a long way. Do your research beforehand (TikTok is a goldmine for must-visit spots), map out your top priorities, and be ready to go with the flow. In a fast-paced city like NYC, long lines and busy streets are part of the experience—but that’s also where the magic happens. You might not squeeze in a full sit-down meal or catch a show in under 12 hours (unless you plan for it!), but the thrill of exploring a new city, even just for a day, makes it all worthwhile.
And if you’re wondering how to pull off a trip like this without breaking the bank or burning out, that’s where smart planning comes in.
Expedia’s Best Travel Hacks to Know for 2026
Enter the Expedia 2026 Air Hacks Report—a total game-changer, especially for Canadian travellers looking to maximize quick trips like micro-cations. If you’re planning a short and sweet getaway, staying ahead with the latest travel tips can make all the difference.
Check out some of the latest findings, below:
The best time of the week to fly and book: According to the report, Thursday is now the new cheapest day to fly and score international savings–thanks to the drop in end-of-week business travel. Friday is also great for getting domestic deals. On the flip side, we learned to book trips on a Monday for the best prices if possible, while avoiding Saturdays (if you can).
The best month to fly: September takes the cake for most affordable travel month, with international hotspots like Raleigh, Amsterdam, and Dublin seeing some of the steepest fare drops. January remains the sweet spot for domestic trips—perfect for post-holiday escapes.
Plus, did you know that the quietest dates to travel are reportedly November 25, December 10, April 8, and June 10? Just something to keep in mind as you plan your future travels.

Traveling Smarter in 2026:
Now in its tenth year, it’s interesting to see how the Air Hacks Report digs into millions of Expedia data points and consumer research to track how traveler habits are evolving. From micro-cations to carry-on-only adventures, it looks like Canadians are really reshaping the way they travel.
Extreme micro-cations are here to stay
Micro-cations are on the rise, with 24-hour round-trip flights becoming more than just a TikTok trend—in fact, 24% of travellers have already done it.
If you’re looking for the best spots to take a day-trip to, look no further than New York, Chicago, and Washington. We can definitely vouch for NYC being one of the best spots for a micro-cation, as it has so much to offer. From top restaurants and shopping to gorgeous views of the city and famous landmarks to visit, this is a definite must-add to your bucket list.
Booking windows & airport hacks
When it comes to booking Domestic flights, booking 31–45 days out can help you achieve max savings. For International flights, booking 15–30 days in advance is cheapest.
Attention all Canadian travellers–the cheapest Canadian departure airports are Abbotsford, BC; Kitchener, ON; and Hamilton, ON (just keep in mind the most expensive are Montreal YUL, Quebec YQB, and Ottawa YOW).
Saver routes & trending destinations
If you’re after some major savings this year (I know we are!), international flights under $400 include Kitchener → Fort Lauderdale, Saskatoon → Minneapolis, and St. John’s → Tampa.
Plus, top-trending destinations for Canadians include: Victoria, Hamilton, Whistler. Internationally, it’s Atlantic City, Naxos, and Guatemala.
In-flight habits are evolving
Carry-on bags for the win!
41% of travellers choose to fly carry-on only, which we definitely think will continue to be a huge trend, even well after 2026. It’s just so much easier to pack light–less hassle, less time spent waiting around in the airport, and more time spent enjoying your travels! Now this is something we can totally get on board with.
Expedia Flight Deals in Canada
Another standout from Expedia is its new Flight Deals tool, which lets you map out flights at least 20% below expected prices, with interactive maps, deal alerts, and filters by destination and travel date. As well, Expedia’s Annual Vacation Sale offers members up to 40% off select stays (hint: book by March 16, 2026, for travel Feb 10–Sept 30).

Whether you’re planning a micro-cation, a long-haul escape, or just trying to avoid the post-holiday crush, Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks Report and new Flight Deals tool proves one thing: smart timing, savvy booking, and a little insider knowledge can make all the difference.
