Heartbreaking Decision: Parents Cease CPR on 14-Month-Old Son

February 7, 2025: Being a mom while coping with grief hasn’t been easy… I still struggle with the question, ‘How many kids do you have?

A Journey Marked by Medical Challenges

Morgan and Cody Christofferson were overjoyed at the birth of their son, Soren. However, their happiness was soon overshadowed by a diagnosis of Pulmonary Atresia with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and Major Aortopulmonary Collateral Arteries (MAPCAs). This complex congenital heart defect meant that Soren faced significant health challenges from the very beginning. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and treatments, Soren’s condition remained precarious. He eventually suffered right-sided heart failure, leading to extended periods on life support and multiple cardiac arrests. Throughout this arduous journey, Morgan and Cody remained steadfast, hoping for a miracle.

The Agonizing Decision

After enduring numerous medical interventions and witnessing their son’s declining condition, the Christoffersons were confronted with an unimaginable choice. Recognizing that Soren’s quality of life had diminished and that he was enduring significant suffering, they made the heart-wrenching decision to halt CPR efforts. Morgan poignantly reflected, “Our little boy was no longer there,” capturing the profound grief and acceptance that accompanied their choice.

Honoring Soren’s Memory

In the aftermath of their loss, Morgan and Cody sought ways to commemorate Soren’s brief yet impactful life. They established a memorial garden and named a piece of land “Soaring Acres” in his honor. These acts served as therapeutic outlets, allowing them to channel their grief into meaningful tributes. Additionally, the couple welcomed another child, Rowen, into their family, bringing a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Through therapy and community support, they continue to navigate the complex emotions of loss and healing.

Raising Awareness and Offering Support

The Christoffersons’ experience underscores the profound challenges faced by parents of children with severe medical conditions. Their story highlights the importance of compassionate care, informed decision-making, and the need for support systems for families in similar situations. By sharing their journey, Morgan and Cody aim to raise awareness about congenital heart defects and provide solace to other families confronting comparable hardships.
