Wanda Sykes Opens Up About Double Mastectomy: ‘It Was My Boobs or My Life’
February 7, 2025: The 60-year-old comedian, who stars in a new Super Bowl ad promoting breast cancer awareness, says she “feels great” following her 2011 diagnosis and credits her wife and teenage twins for helping her maintain her health.
A Difficult but Life-Saving Decision
Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes has no regrets about undergoing a double mastectomy, a decision she made after a shocking health discovery. In a recent interview, Sykes, 60, reflected on the choice, stating, “It was my boobs or my life.” The Emmy-winning entertainer, known for her bold humor and candid nature, explained that despite the challenges, she never second-guessed her decision.
Diagnosed During a Routine Checkup
Sykes revealed that she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer, during a routine checkup. While the condition was not immediately life-threatening, doctors informed her that it could develop into something more aggressive over time. Instead of taking any risks, Sykes opted for a preventive double mastectomy to eliminate any future concerns.
No Regrets About Her Choice
The Curb Your Enthusiasm star emphasized that she has no regrets about her surgery. “I wanted to be here for my family,” she said. Sykes, who is married to wife Alex Niedbalski and shares two children with her, knew she had to make a decision that prioritized her long-term health. She also admitted that while it was an emotional process, her sense of humor helped her cope.
Encouraging Women to Prioritize Their Health
Since her diagnosis and surgery, Sykes has been vocal about the importance of early detection and proactive healthcare. She encourages women to stay on top of their routine screenings and not ignore warning signs. “If something doesn’t feel right, get it checked out. You never know—it could save your life,” she advised.
Continuing to Inspire
Despite the personal challenges, Sykes remains a powerhouse in comedy and entertainment. She continues to perform, produce, and advocate for health awareness, all while maintaining the sharp wit and fearless attitude that have defined her career.
