August 2, 2024– Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, is making waves online following Angela Carini pulling out of their fight after just seconds.

Carini went viral for being in tears after the match talking to reporters because she reportedly suffered a powerful punch to the nose by Khelif. The match lasted only 46 seconds and led to a widespread debate online about gender eligibility rules in the competition.

However, this also led to false information being spread in which rumors began floating around that Khelif was a man, or transgender.

Despite misinformation floating about online, Khelif was assigned female at birth. This is also evident on her passport.
However, as noted here, controversy began after it was discovered that Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships due to failing unclear and undisclosed eligibility tests for women’s competition conducted by the now-banned International Boxing Association. IBA was stripped of its status as the global governing body for boxing by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year.
The IOC allowed Khelif to compete this year at the Paris 2024 Olympic games. This is supposedly because a new test showed her hormone levels within the acceptable range for the female category which put into question fairness. As noted in this video, posted by user @cc_plus_, Khelif reportedly suffers from Hyperandrogenism which is a condition that alters testosterone levels in her body and gives her increased muscle mass and strength.

This can be seen as giving Khelif an advantage over her opponents when fighting in the ring.
