Mortal Kombat 2 Trailer and Tournament Revealed
Mortal Kombat is finally getting its anticipated sequel movie, starring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and the much-anticipated tournament.
“Let Mortal Kombat decide their fate.”
This eerie line ends the recently released concept Mortal Kombat 2 trailer, revealing what is at stake in the sequel.
The ending of 2021’s Mortal Kombat showed that Earth’s fighters had been victorious, but their safety still hangs in the balance. Shang Tsung, the evil head of the Outworld, promised to return, leaving Earth’s heroes with little to do but prepare to fight once more.
Former MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) sets out to find a new recruit to aid in the fight against evil. And the person he finds none other than the much-loved and eccentric Johnny Cage.
Played by The Boys star Karl Urban, Johnny’s presence was teased in the prequel, but now he’s ready for the real action.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator, highlights Johnny’s importance to the sequel. “His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing.”
The Tournament is Finally Here
Fans disappointed that the first movie didn’t receive its tournament don’t have to wait much longer. Mortal Kombat 2 puts the competition front and center.
In the EW interview, Boon provides further inside information on the tournament: “There’s a visual representation of who is winning…. It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”
Mortal Kombat 2 Cast
Besides Cole Young, many characters from the first movie are making their reappearance in the sequel. Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) are all making a comeback.
New cast members include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Martyn Ford as Outworld overlord Shao Kahn.
Mortal Kombat 2 is releasing in theatres on October 24.
