One Child Dead, Two Critically Injured; Father Facing Multiple Charges

Tragic Morning of September 11

October 2, 2025: On the morning of September 11, 2025, Jeffery Smerer, a 44-year-old father from Port Huron, Michigan, allegedly shot his three children—17-year-old Kayleb, 13-year-old Bentley, and 12-year-old Kinzley—before they left for school. Kayleb died from his injuries, while Bentley and Kinzley were critically wounded. Kinzley remains paralyzed and faces multiple surgeries.

Background and Motive

Smerer had been convicted earlier this year of indecent exposure involving a child at the family’s daycare between 2020 and 2023. He was scheduled to be sentenced on the morning of the shooting. Reports indicate that Smerer had been planning the attack for a week, expressing stress over the impending sentencing and the possibility of incarceration.

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings

Following the shooting, Smerer reportedly attempted suicide but was stopped by his wife and adult son. He was arrested and charged with open murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and five firearm-related offenses. Smerer is currently being held without bond and is awaiting trial.

Community Response and Support

The community has been left in shock by the incident. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and medical costs for the surviving children. Family members and neighbors have expressed disbelief, emphasizing that such violence was uncharacteristic of Smerer, who had been known as a maintenance worker at the apartment complex.

This tragic event underscores the profound impact of unresolved personal issues and the importance of mental health support. As legal proceedings continue, the community remains focused on supporting the surviving children and seeking justice for the victims.
