During the holiday season, it’s inevitable that you’ll consume more food and drinks than usual. Between Christmas dinner(s), holiday parties and more, there’s so much to eat and drink that it’s so easy to get lost in it all. Let’s face it— everyone is more than a little guilty of overindulging this time of year.

But all of that overindulging comes at a price. In addition to possible weight gain and feeling not so great, bloating is another common occurrence. But that doesn’t mean you have to just suck it up and live with it. Here are three tips to help you overcome holiday bloat.

  1. Don’t starve yourself

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is prepare for an impending feast by eating little to nothing beforehand. If you go into a dinner or party not feeling famished, you’ll be more likely to eating everything in sight. Not only does that mean eating more calories than expected, but that also will lead to feeling extremely bloated. You’re better off having breakfast (or a meal) beforehand, and maybe even a snack if necessary. That will keep you from wanting to eat everything in sight.

  1. Be mindful of your portions

During holiday dinners and parties, people tend to grab more food and larger portions. It goes back to people wishing to indulge more during the holiday season. The problem with doing this is that it can lead to bloating up from the increased food consumption. That’s why during the holiday season, it’s more important to mind your portions and even use a smaller plate if need be. After all, you want to feel full after a meal— not stuffed and bloated.

  1. Drink as much water as possible

The holiday season is prime time for drinking to your heart’s content. If you happen to drink, you may end up consume more holiday-themed cocktails than intended. Carbonated drinks— both alcoholic and otherwise— are also well-known culprits for bloating. Try to limit your consumption of alcoholic and carbonated beverages, and switch to water instead. Drinking a lot of water helps flush out your body and reduce any bloating you may have. So try to choose water over any culprits of bloating in order to keep it at bay.

Holiday bloating may seem inevitable, but it doesn’t have to happen to you. These three tips will help combat bloating so that you can enjoy the holiday season. That way, you can indulge a little bit without feeling gross and heavy.
