The Interior Design Show 2020 (IDS20) offered a spectacle of visual delights this past month in Toronto. One such installation was the design collaboration: Caesarstone x Jonathan Adler:  “Dreamland.”

Dreamland was achieved through the excellence of two distinctive designers merging ideas and raw earth materials. Minimalists, please exit stage left. This collaboration was all about making a statement at IDS20 originating from the Caesarstone Designer Program, and where Jonathan Adler has integrated his sense of panache with the precision and edges of Caesarstone’s surfaces. The “Dreamland” reflects back to disco glam when all one really needed was champagne and a disco nap before heading to Studio 54. Magic and stardust set the tone as Adler offered a maximalist display to end all displays. Adler is best known for his pottery and eclectic home decor accouterments. The partnership debuted at Toronto’s design exposition, the Interior Design Show 2020  in mid-January at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. 

Who’s inside Dreamland?  The first object that really stood out was the quartz cream and gold coffee tables, each stamped with an auspicious hand painted eye. Handcrafted stone clouds were illuminated across the walls. The ultimate treasure was a white porcelain vase, shaped with at least 24 inches of Kardashian-Esque buttocks of swaying plumage. 

The Caesarstone x Jonathan Adler Dreamland installation exhibits the surreal objects one might see in a fluid dream. The visual impact sent me on a tailspin to visit the Adler boutique on Lincoln Road in South Beach, Miami. In a world where attention spans are less than three minutes, we are compelled to pause. 

Only the most versatile of designers accept the challenge of merging with Caesarstone quartz.  Adler chose to create stone columns that blend well amongst his sumptuous objets d’art. With Adler’s peculiar designs, one can satisfy any fetish with a collection of embellished eyes, a Roman nose, a female torso or a gluteus maximus vase. We sense an ongoing glorification of the human form in a reductionist aesthetic.  Caesarstone is a luxury home design company showcasing quartz countertops. The company is run by a kibbutz located by the ancient Roman coastal city of Caesarea, in Israel on the Mediterranean.  Caesarstone’s non-porous nature provides maximum resistance to staining which can attest to the resilience of the products within the Adler collaboration. To note, Caesarstone’s Designer Program challenges each designer to integrate their luxury quartz and celebrates its brand through partnerships with interdisciplinary designers from across the world, who each offer their innovative outlook on the adaptable material. Previous collaborations include Marije Vogelzang, Snarkitecture, Jaime Hayon, Tom Dixon and more. As a diehard Jonathan Adler fan, my wish is to have more of his eyes around my home.
