English Teacher Cancelled Amid Brian Alvarez Sexual Misconduct Claims
The FX series English Teacher, starring and created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, has been cancelled after two seasons despite stellar reviews. The high-school comedy premiered in September 2024 and returned for a second season in October 2025 with a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes for season two.
Just weeks later however, FX announced it would not proceed with a third season. Although the network did not cite any specific reason the timing coincides with resurfaced allegations of sexual assault against Alvarez that began circulating over a year ago.
The Allegations Against Brian Jordan Alvarez
Alvarez has been accused by former collaborator Jon Ebeling of non-consensual sexual contact during a 2016 shoot for the web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling claimed Alvarez performed unwanted acts and later filed a complaint with the LAPD.
Alvarez and his legal team deny the allegations outright. A spokesperson said all interactions involving Alvarez and Ebeling were “entirely consensual — as numerous witnesses have attested”. His attorney characterized the accuser as seeking attention and manipulated the story in retrospect.
The allegations first became public in December 2024 in a report from Vulture. FX initially renewed “English Teacher” for a second season in February 2025, two months after the report. Questions later emerged about the network’s decision to continue despite a creator facing unresolved accusations.
Fallout and Network Response
Viewers and industry observers have noted the discrepancy between the show’s critical acclaim and its cancellation. “English Teacher” maintained praise from critics and secured award-shortlist status, yet streaming numbers and live viewership did not appear to meet network benchmarks. One report cited a pilot live audience of around 212,000 viewers before settling into lower weekly numbers.
While FX has offered no public statement linking the cancellation directly to Alvarez’s conduct, the timing has fueled speculation that the allegations played a key role. On fan forums such as Reddit’s r/popculturechat, discussion threads have shifted from praising the show’s cast and premise to critiquing the industry’s handling of misconduct in entertainment.
