Duolingo Owl Dead? – “Ongoing Investigation”

February 12, 2025 – On Feb 11th, Duolingo shared that its beloved owl mascot Duo has died and that there is an “ongoing investigation”.

Popular language learning app, Duolingo, shared heartbreaking news yesterday. According to an official post on their Instagram, Duolingo’s infamous Owl mascot, Duo, is dead.

The app has yet to reveal details about Duo’s death, stating that there is an “ongoing investigation”. However, Duolingo has their suspicions, jesting: “Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know.”

The app also jokingly added that people could also include their “credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory.”

Fans have responded to the owl’s death, many sharing stories in the post’s comments. One user said “It wasn’t me, I just hit my 1300 day streak” and another mentioned “Duo nooooo my favourite chicken.”

Even Dua Lipa, who Duo has famously adored, had a parting message for the owl: “Til’ death duo part.”

E!News spoke with a Duolingo spokesperson about the owl’s legacy: “For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to do their language lessons—sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence.” Such an important and infamous owl would not drop dead without reason. The spokesperson continued, “Keep an eye on our social channels as we uncover the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise.”

An important update on Duolingo’s Instagram reveals the following: “Officials have identified cause of death. More details to follow.”
