ESPN Broadcaster Mike Patrick Dies At 80

April 23, 2025 – A voice known and beloved by many, longtime ESPN broadcaster, Mike Patrick, passes away at 80.

Last Sunday, much-beloved Mike Patrick passed away due to natural causes at the age of 80, revealed ESPN.

Patrick was a voice and face known to many sports fans. For 36 years, he worked as a devoted play-by-play commentator for ESPN and voiced 18 seasons of “Sunday Night Football.” His work made him a distinguished and infamous name in the sports community, and many fans paid their respects on social media upon hearing the news.

“He was really good. A unique and one of a kind voice,” one fan commented.

“Rest in peace legend,” someone else wrote.

The president of ESPN content, Burke Magnus, commemorated Patrick, stating, “Mike Patrick called countless significant events over decades at ESPN and is one of the most influential on-air voices in our history.” He continued, “In addition to calling ESPN’s first-ever regular season NFL game and voicing the ‘Sunday Night Football’ franchise for 18 seasons, Mike’s work on college sports was exceptional.”

Patrick debuted as an ESPN play-by-play commentator in 1982. He continued for three decades, voicing his last game on Dec 30, 2017. After he left ESPN, he told the company in 2018, “it’s wonderful to reflect on how I’ve done exactly what I wanted to do with my life,” continuing, “at the same time, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some of the very best people I’ve ever known, both on the air and behind the scenes.”

Co-commentator and friend, Jay Bilas also mourned Patrick’s passing on social media, calling him a true “pro’s pro.”
