The New Golden Bachelor is Retired NFL-player Mel Owens
April 24, 2025 – Looks, brawn, brain, Mel Owens has it all. Now, the NFL-player-turned-lawyer is looking for love as the new Golden Bachelor.
“The Golden Bachelor” is returning to the party screen, and its plus-one is leading man Mel Owens. The viral reality dating has been renewed for a second season on Hulu and ABC, and all the spotlights are on 66-year-old Owens.
Now, grab your glass of wine and cosy up because Owens is more than a handsome bachelor. He’s the proud father of two, a former NLF player, and a lawyer.
Variety revealed Owens joined the NFL in 1981, where he was a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams. After playing for nine seasons, he retired and temporarily worked as a financial adviser for Merrill Lynch. But that did not satisfy him for long. He obtained his law degree from UC-San Francisco, and has turned his attention back on the sports scene, specializing in sports law and sports injuries.
Cosmopolitan shared that Owens was married before but split with his ex-wife after his father’s passing. According to ABC, after his divorce, “Owens channeled his energy into being the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams.”
And now, he’s looking for love.

After ABC revealed Owens to be the next Golden Bachelor, fans went wild with excitement. Many of them commented that they were ecstatic to hear that a new bachelor would be joining the new season instead of someone from previous episodes.
“Much as I was thinking it would be someone we know already and would’ve been happy about that, I like that the Golden Bachelor is new. Looking forward to getting to know Mel,” one commenter wrote.
