Sonya Massey Shot By Police Bodycam Footage
On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, was fatally shot by Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson in her Springfield, Illinois home. Massey had called 911 to report a potential intruder. When deputies arrived, an altercation occurred inside her residence, during which Deputy Grayson discharged his firearm, striking Massey. She was later pronounced dead at St. John’s Hospital.

Following the incident, Deputy Grayson was indicted on three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. The Sangamon County State’s Attorney stated that the investigation did not support the use of deadly force by Grayson.
