The DC Studios co-CEO provides an update on Viola Davis’ highly anticipated Amanda Waller series.

September 1, 2025: James Gunn has reassured fans that the planned Amanda Waller spin-off series, starring Oscar winner Viola Davis, is still in the works — even though progress has been slower than expected.

In an exclusive interview, the Peacemaker and Guardians of the Galaxy director shared that the project remains an important piece of DC Studios’ upcoming lineup. “We’re still working on it,” Gunn explained, adding candidly, “It’s not been the fastest process, but we want to make sure it’s done right.”

A Central Figure in the DC Universe

Davis’ portrayal of Amanda Waller, the no-nonsense government operative who oversees the Suicide Squad, has been one of the standout performances across multiple DC films, including Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad (2021), and HBO Max’s Peacemaker.

Gunn emphasized that the series will dive deeper into Waller’s complex moral code and her role in shaping the DC Universe. “She’s such a fascinating character, and Viola is just incredible in the role,” he said. “We’re building something that truly highlights her presence and power.”

Part of DC’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”

The Amanda Waller show is part of Gunn and co-chair Peter Safran’s relaunch of the DC Universe, under their banner “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” While projects like Superman have been moving forward, some spin-offs, including Peacemaker Season 2 and Waller’s series, have faced scheduling and development hurdles.

Despite the delays, Gunn made it clear that both he and Davis are committed. “It’s still very much happening,” he said, hinting that fans can expect more updates soon.

What Fans Can Expect

Although specific plot details remain under wraps, the series is expected to bridge storylines between Peacemaker and larger DC projects, exploring Waller’s political maneuvering and her morally gray decisions.

With Davis at the helm and Gunn overseeing creative development, anticipation remains high. “We’re making something we’re proud of,” Gunn promised. “And trust me, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is worth the wait.”
