The BAFTAs has always been one of the best awards shows to watch, not only because it really sets the bar for what is to be expected at the Oscars but just simply because it’s British. This year’s BAFTAs had a lot of surprises, a lot of history-making, and a lot of laughs. 

To start off with something we all miss, the red carpet. As this was the first award show of the season to have in-person attendees, many outfits seemed boring and a bit ill-fitting, but a few really surprised us. 

Vanessa Kirby nominated for Best Actress for Pieces of a Woman wore Atelier Versace. Although you thought spaghetti straps and a square neckline were out of the picture, Vanessa works this dress so well, as it hugs her figure as if the material were liquid metal, and the slit showed the perfect amount of skin. 

Kosar Ali nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Rocks wore Alexander McQueen, the all-white look is different for McQueen, but the style is not. To think a cropped blazer and turtleneck pairs well with an ankle-length dress that is shredded tulle to add texture. Completing the look with an ivory headscarf and embellished brooch. 

Kingsley Ben-Adir nominated for Rising Star Award dazzled in Dior Men, with another turtleneck. Kingsley wore a custom silk double-breasted evening jacket with a belt, a look he claims to be quite comfortable. His role as Malcolm X in A Night In Miami awarded him his nomination. 

Pedro Pascal was seen on the actual red carpet as a presenter. He quite literally broke the internet for looking so good in Prada. Pedro wore a single-breasted stretch trench coat, white stretch poplin shirt, black stretch trousers and black derby shoes. All this stretch, yet it looked like it fit him so well. 

As the red carpet was great, the award show was truly one to watch. A hilarious moment happened when Youn Yuh-Jung won best supporting actress for Minari, and bid a thank you to the BAFTAs especially because British people are ‘Snobbish’ and I assure you everyone laughed. 

Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for The Father, not only did he not think he would win (so he didn’t show up) but he is also the oldest winner for a lead role at the age of 83. As this was a surprise, what wasn’t a surprise was Chloe Zhoa win for Best Director for Nomadland, Zhoa has been cleaning up at every award show thus far and I have faith that she will become the first Chinese female to win at the Oscars. 

As the award show came to an end, the viewers were satisfied with how the BAFTAs entertained and truly made the right decisions about the awards, now it’s time to see if the Oscars can follow in their footsteps.
