Charli XCX Embraces Edgy Cinema, Citing Cronenberg and Ferrara as Key Inspirations
Pop star embraces darker, thought-provoking cinema.
August 7, 2025: Charli XCX is opening up about her growing interest in acting and the unconventional inspirations shaping her approach to film. The singer, known for her experimental pop sound and bold visuals, revealed that her taste in cinema leans toward directors who challenge audiences — namely David Cronenberg and Abel Ferrara.
From Stage to Screen
While Charli has made her name in the music world with genre-pushing albums like Brat and Crash, she’s recently stepped into acting projects that explore moodier and more intense narratives. For her, the shift feels natural. “Music and film are both about creating worlds,” she explained in a recent interview. “But acting allows me to step into someone else’s world entirely — even if it’s uncomfortable or messy.”
Drawn to the Dark and Unsettling
Citing filmmakers like Cronenberg, known for his body horror classics, and Ferrara, whose films often tackle gritty moral dilemmas, Charli admitted she doesn’t necessarily look to cinema for comfort. “I don’t necessarily go to movies to feel good,” she said. “I like to leave the theater with more questions than answers.”
Art Over Escapism
Charli believes that the most impactful films are the ones that provoke thought and stir strong emotions — even if those emotions are discomfort or unease. “It’s about pushing boundaries, just like I do in my music. Art should sometimes be abrasive. It should shake you.”
What’s Next for Charli on Screen
While details of her upcoming roles remain under wraps, she hinted that her next acting project will be “visually intense and psychologically layered,” aligning with the cinematic influences she’s drawn to. Fans can expect to see her exploring more unconventional roles rather than mainstream romantic leads.
As Charli puts it, “The same way I don’t make music for background playlists, I don’t want to make movies that just pass the time.”
