Focus Features and Working Title Lock In September Debut for All-Star Adaptation
A New Chapter for the Dashwood Sisters
November 18, 2025: Focus Features, Universal Pictures International, and Working Title Films have officially set the theatrical release dates for their new adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. The film is scheduled to premiere in US theaters on September 11, 2026, with a UK release following shortly after on September 25, 2026.
This prime fall date positions the highly anticipated period drama for a run during the early stages of the 2027 awards season, suggesting high confidence from the collaborating studios, who have previously found success with Austen adaptations like Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Emma. (2020).
Daisy Edgar-Jones Leads Star-Studded Cast
The new film is directed by Georgia Oakley, whose feature debut Blue Jean garnered critical acclaim, and is based on a screenplay by author Diana Reid.
Sense and Sensibility follows the story of the Dashwood sisters—Elinor and Marianne—as they navigate love, loss, and precarious finances in 18th-century England following the death of their father.
Daisy Edgar-Jones (known for Normal People and Twisters) is set to star as the pragmatic eldest sister, Elinor Dashwood.
Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna) will play her passionately spirited sister, Marianne Dashwood.
The rest of the impressive ensemble cast includes:
George MacKay (1917) as Edward Ferrars
Caitríona Balfe (Outlander) as Mrs. Dashwood
Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead) as John Willoughby
Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) as Mrs. Jennings
Carrying the Legacy of a Classic
The new movie steps into the shadow of the beloved 1995 Oscar-winning adaptation, directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as the Dashwood sisters. However, with the backing of Focus Features and the direction of rising star Georgia Oakley, this version promises a fresh take on the enduring story of “sense” versus “sensibility.”
