David Johansen’s Battle with Stage 4 Cancer and Brain Tumor: Family Seeks Support for Medical Expenses

The New York Dolls’ frontman faces health challenges, prompting a fundraising initiative.

A Decade-Long Health Struggle

David Johansen, renowned as the lead singer of the New York Dolls and for his alter ego Buster Poindexter, has been privately battling stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor for nearly ten years. His daughter, Leah Hennessey, recently disclosed his condition, highlighting the family’s need for financial assistance to manage escalating medical costs.

Recent Setbacks

In addition to his ongoing health issues, Johansen suffered a severe fall after Thanksgiving, resulting in two spinal fractures. Following surgery, he has been bedridden, with his condition deteriorating. Leah emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that her mother, Mara Hennessey, has been providing constant care, but professional assistance is now essential.

Fundraising Efforts

To support Johansen’s medical needs, including full-time nursing and physical therapy, the family has partnered with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund to establish the David Johansen Fund. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden and provide Johansen with the necessary care to improve his quality of life.

A Call for Community Support

Johansen, who has entertained audiences for decades, expressed his reluctance to seek help but acknowledged the severity of his situation. He stated, “I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency.” The family remains hopeful that with specialized care, Johansen can regain some mobility and independence.

The music community and fans are encouraged to contribute to the David Johansen Fund to assist in providing the necessary medical care for the esteemed musician during this challenging time.
