There is a RISE in herbalists and herbalism, and the rumours, stereo types, and stigma’s around hemp and CBD products are contradicting and endless.  Before the whole rise in herbalists, Calyx Welness came to the scene. Calyx Wellness produces CBD products developed to harvest, maintain, and protect good health. Their goal is to help communities heal and thrive through a healthy, balanced lifestyle aided by CBD therapy. We sat down with founder Danielle Blair to de-bud the rumours and stigma’s surrounding CBD

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is a cannabinoid molecule, found in the cannabis and hemp plant. Research suggests that the CBD molecule modulates many physiological functions in the brain and body, through what we call, the Endocannabinoid System. It is known that all mammals encompass their own Endocannabinoid System and through the interaction of cannabinoids we are able to bring healing to the places in our bodies that need it most.

Why use CBD?

CBD’s main purpose is to help the body achieve natural balance, known as homeostasis.  Being that CBD is a natural alternative, this can also become an option for those that want to stay aligned with a more holistic approach to healing. From pain management to its anxiolytic effects, CBD works on the brain and body to help aid in whole health. Listed below are some of the reasons why one would turn to CBD as an alternative.

Anti-inflammatory, reducing inflammation and pain

Promotes bone, tissue, and muscle repair

High antioxidant properties, aiding anti-aging

Anti-bacterial, anti-viral properties

Can relieve anxiety and lessens the severity of psychosis

Prevents degeneration of Central Nervous System

Treats psoriasis

Aids sleep

Reduces seizures and convulsions

Inhibits growth in cancer and tumors cells

Slows bacterial growth

Suppresses muscle spasms

Endocannabinoids potentially modulate the immune system on an inflammatory level

Debunking rumours on the negative effects of CBD

Some of the rumours surrounding CBD is that you need THC to be present for the compound to be effective. This is called “the entourage effect”. Whereas this may be helpful for some people, we must be mindful that this is not the case for everyone, especially not for pets. Here at Calyx, we provide products that specialize in the pure properties of the one isolated molecule, CBD derived from the Hemp plant. The key factor in Hemp derived CBD isolate products is that it comes with all the benefits without the “high”.

What recommendations do you have for people looking to try CBD?

When it comes to introducing CBD into your day to day, it is important that you find a brand and product that resonates with you. Hemp Derived CBD Isolate products are an amazing place to start because they are gentle on the system, with no psychoactive effects. You might have to experiment when beginning CBD so stay open to the possibilities, as this is the case when understanding what kind of dosage would work best for you. Another key crucial factor to stay consistent with your CBD when looking for long-term results regarding more chronic cases.

What should consumers look for in beauty products when it comes to CBD?  (i.e., how to know what is and isn’t good)

When applying anything to your skin, purity and simplicity is where you will find the best results. There is research that suggests CBD can be a more potent antioxidant than vitamins C and E, and many companies are beginning to use CBD in skincare products as a result. Always be mindful of the ingredients and added essential oils as every skin type is different. If you have a CBD oil that is MCT and Grapeseed based, like the tinctures at Calyx — some add those directly to an existing cream or apply the oil directly to the skin. This is a great option when looking for a serum to aid in plasticity of the skin when using facial tools like a Jade Roller or Gua Sha set.

What are some benefits of CBD for pets?

Our pets can use CBD for the same reasons that a human would. A lot of pet owners are looking to CBD as a natural alternative to ailments such as separation anxiety, old age mobility, arthritis, sleep, focus for training and the list goes on. Because all mammals have their own Endocannabinoid System, CBD can be used in a pet’s daily regime acting as a preventative supplement to keep pets happy and balanced.
