The Ice-Bucket challenge has returned to the internet. The viral trend has made a comeback on TikTok, but this time with a new purpose.

Ice Bucket Challenge 2025

The Ice Bucket Challenge dates back to 2014 when internet users posted videos of themselves dumping buckets of freezing water over their heads to raise money for research on ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. However, the trend has resurfaced after being dormant for some time.

As outlined in Forbes, the new version of the challenge was started by students at the University of South Carolina. Specifically, the university’s Mental Illness Needs Club posted about it on their Instagram. However, instead of ALS research, the club encouraged online users to do the challenge to raise funds for mental health.

The trend was re-created by Wade Jefferson, a student at the university. Wade re-launched the challenge to honor two friends he lost to suicide. In addition, Wade initially aimed to only raise roughly $500 for the nonprofit organization Active Mind. However, the challenge has surpassed his expectations, now surpassing $190,000 and continuing to grow.

When the challenge first started trending, everyone was basically doing it. This included well-known celebrities and content creators. In addition, the new version of the challenge is no different, but this time it has been trending on TikTok.

Moreover, the new challenge is focused on breaking stigma and raising awareness about mental health issues.
