Apple Watch Series 9

As noted in the TikTok video, Apple is about to halt sales of the Series 9 and Ultra 2 Apple Watch. However, they will still be available to purchase- just not directly through Apple, supposedly. Apple has to stop selling these versions reportedly because of a medical device maker named Masimo.

In October, it was allegedly revealed that Apple was violating one of Masimo’s patents. The patent allegedly includes using light-based technology to read blood oxygen levels. As of right now, the Series 9 and Ultra 2 Apple Watches are the only Apple Watches that have the feature that violate the patents.

Apple will still be allowed to sell older Apple Watches, just not these newer versions, according to the TikToker. Apple allegedly disagrees with the legal situation and it seems as though the brand may take this issue to court in order to fight it. Owners of the Apple Watches affected are worried that Apple Care will no longer be provided but this has not yet been confirmed.

As the TikToker notes, this is all speculation and we don’t know exactly what is going to happen.

Why is Apple pausing watch sales?

This article confirmed that Apple has to halt sales of some versions of the Apple Watch in the US- as quickly as this week. It is unclear if the watches in question are “banned” completely as the TikToker has suggested. In the article, it is reported that President Biden “has 60 days to review the ruling before a ban could go into effect.”
