August 5, 2024– According to this TikTok video posted by user @emmanuelacho, there was initially some controversy surrounding Lyles winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s 100m dash.

Lyles was appointed the title of “World’s Fastest Man” as noted here following his win at the 100 m event in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
As the TikToker above notes, there was some initial controversy surrounding whether or not Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson had won instead as this is what people had originally believed- before photo evidence proved this to not be the case. The TikToker claims that track and field is not about the first body part that crosses the line but reportedly rather whose torso crosses the line first. This is also confirmed in this article, which claims that “according to Olympic rules and regulations, the first athlete whose torso reaches the closest edge of the finish line is the winner.” As a result, the trunk of the body counts instead of the head, limbs, or feet.
The TikToker explains that Lyles leans with his shoulders and his chest, which counts as his torso. However, Thompson’s foot crossed the line first but it didn’t actually matter because he concaved his chest. As a result, Lyles’ torso crossed the finish line first, hence why he got the Gold in the end.
The TikToker notes that if Thompson had seemingly leaned with his chest, he may have beaten Lyles in the race.
However, as this article notes, Lyles won by .005 seconds.
This photo finish was the defining factor in who won the Gold, which, in this case, was Lyles.
