The long-awaited fantasy series is set to premiere September 2nd on Prime Video and is a prequel to The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit.
Synopsis of Series
The show is centered around the brave heroes of the Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. As previously mentioned, the series is set thousands of years before J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will show audiences the era in which terrific powers were developed, kingdoms gained authority and collapsed to nothing, unlikely characters were tried, and hope hung in the balance. Viewers will also see the strongest villain that jeopardized the entire world to be in complete darkness. The show starts in a period of peace, and displays characters (both recognizable and new) as they encounter the heavy-feared resurgence of evil to Middle-earth. Prime Video describes the journey of these characters as: “From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”
Director Statement on Disassociating with the Acclaimed LOTR Movies
In an Interview with SFX, director JA Bayona discusses the decision to move away from resembling The Lord of The Rings films. JA Bayona states: “We all love what Peter Jackson did and at the very beginning, we thought about establishing some kind of a bridge between the show and the movies. But then, as you realise the complexity of each world, you get invested in your own story. Then, unconsciously, you start to create something that has its own life.”
“The bar was set very high, and I’m glad that Amazon had the ambition of going there – I tried to at least match what Peter Jackson did – but the more we were working with the characters and the story, the more we were unconsciously disconnecting from the movies,” Bayona added.
