The new Snow White film is reportedly significantly underperforming at the box office. However, is this due to it being a progressive re-vamp of a Disney classic?
Snow White movie box office
25th March 2025- As outlined in Screen Rant, the film was expected to make $100 million during its release. However, the film only ended up making $ 87.3 million. To make matters worse, experts are estimating that the film will not reach the box office ‘‘safety net” of $ 500 million. Instead, the film is expected to struggle even getting to $300 million or $400 million.
The film has been widely met with a lukewarm reception from both critics and audiences. However, changes to the narrative have also sparked discussion about progressiveness in older media.
Snow White film controversy
The original ‘Snow White’ was released in 1937 and is considered a nostalgic classic. However, the ending of that version has sparked controversy as modern viewers revisit it. For instance, media and film academics have highlighted that the prince’s kissing the unconscious main character is actually non-consensual.
Rachel Zegler interview
Even before the film’s release, Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular character, made it clear that this would be a modern take on the fairy tale. To illustrate, in an interview promoting the film, she refers to the 1937 version as “extremely dated.”
Her co-star, Gal Gadot, expresses the same sentiment. For instance, the Wonder Woman actress states that Snow White is “not gonna be saved by the prince.”

While Zegler received instant backlash for her criticism of the first film, this did not stop the filmmakers from releasing the project. However, is the film genuinely bad, or are audiences not ready for a remake that questions a beloved classic?
Despite its reception remaining half-hearted, this is still an important question to ponder.
