Snow White Controversy

In the recent week videos of Rachel Zegler discussing her upcoming film, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, has sparked backlash against the actress and the Walt Disney company.

It started when an interview of Rachel Zegler (Snow White) and Gal Gadot (The Evil Queen), at Disney’s 2022 D23 Expo, resurfaced on TikTok ten months after the interview was first uploaded.

In the interview she talked about how she has never been a fan of the original film and has only recently watched it for research on her character.

She continued criticizing the film calling it “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for in the world. Gal Gadot added that in their take on the film Snow White is “not gonna be saved by the prince”.

This sparked outrage. Those reacting to this believe her comments are disrespectful to the groundbreaking film. One user said ” If you hate the original this much why would you want to make the remake. Pls make it make sense.”

As this was circulating online, people began to dig up other interviews of Zegler making similar comments.

In another interview she continues her criticism by saying that Snow White falls in love with “a guy who literally stalks her” calling it “weird” and clarifying that this new adaptation will be very different.

Apparently this film will not be focusing on her love story at all. In the same interview Zegler said that Snow White is “not going to be dreaming about true love, she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be.”

There’s nothing wrong with a woman dreaming of leadership. What people are upset about, is the fact that this new adaptation seems to be completely changing the essence of Snow White as a character and her story.

Some women are arguing the fact that not all women want to be leaders. Some women dream of true love and marriage, but that doesn’t make them any less valuable than those who don’t.

Others are coming to Zegler’s defense calling the criticism against her anti-feminist. check out this @jstoobs had to say in this TikTok:
