Giambattista Valli remains to be a sucker for romance in his new Spring Summer 2022 Ready-To-Wear collection.
With the rise of subversive basics and street style, Giambattista Valli is staying true to what he does best: Romanticism. The frilly dresses and floral prints can be construed as done and over with by the fashion community, but the Italian designer knows how to stand his ground. And he is very good at it too.

His eponymous brand is known to herald femininity in all aspects. His couture collections are widely known for their volume and drama, and while this new collection does not have both, it still exudes a feminine attitude– a cooler one at that. His Spring Summer 2022 collection is like cottagecore’s cooler, older sister with embellished gladiator sandals, tiered ruffle dresses, metallic cat-eye sunglasses and empire waistlines.
With romance, comes intimacy. Giambattista Valli presented his new collection in Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. The white walls were adorned with the works of Matisse, Dufy, and other famous 20th century artists. The guests were allowed to roam the venue and admire the art while they wait for the show to start. Other than that, Valli wanted a more intimate experience by opting out of second-row seats. All the guests and attendees can view the clothes up close and admire them like art.

The empire waist dresses are an obvious nod to the romantic era of the regency period, but the collection still emits a refreshing, modern take. His signature tiered tulle and ruffle dresses are not going anywhere just yet, but this time the dresses are sheer with an added embroidery. The colour palette is also reflective of a romantic garden one would see in a soft impressionist watercolour painting, but the harshness of the details like the jacquard suits will make it look contemporary.

This new Spring-Summer show also feels like a continuation of Giambattista Valli’s previous Autumn-Winter collection. The silhouettes, fabrication, and prints are almost similar but this one is more of a lighter version. It is less harsh on the colours and more–well–romantic. To Valli, his idea of new feminism is about women who are free to be themselves. These types of women are the ones who can openly dress like princesses, those who can freely express themselves as romantics, and those who are not afraid to be perceived as cliches. Besides, as Valli said before his show, “don’t be scared of beauty.”
