Taylor Swift made a rare public appearance at the 2022 VMAs on Sunday, August 28. The pop icon won a VMA for a video that was directed alone, making history as the first artist to do so. Swift has now become the first one to win Video of the Year three times.

She appeared on the VMAs red carpet wearing a gown covered with gems identical to the one in her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video.

While accepting the most coveted award of the evening, Swift made the unexpected announcement and thanked her fans for providing inspiration for the winning video for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).”

“I wouldn’t be able to re-record my albums if it weren’t for you. You embolden me to do that, and I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out Oct. 21,” she told the crowd.

She previously shared the record for the most Video of the Year wins, twice, with Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Eminem. Swift received the award twice before, once in 2015 for “Bad Blood” and once in 2019 for “You Need To Calm Down.” She is the second female director to get the award, and she also took home the Moon Person for Best Longform Video.

In addition, the “All Too Well” video received a nomination for Best Cinematography. Harry Styles won the prize for “As It Was”. The Best Editing award went to Rosalia for “Saoko,” although “All Too Well” was also nominated.

In 2008, Swift was nominated for her first MTV VMA in the category of Best New Artist. For “I Knew You Were Trouble,” she received her first Video of the Year nomination in 2013.
