As noted by Page Six, fans have noticed that the dress Margot Robbie is seen wearing in the trailer is very similar to Dorothy Gale’s famous blue frock in ‘Wizard of Oz’. The speculation about the movie’s possible plot only heightened with the presence of a pink brick road that could be the Barbie version of Oz’s iconic yellow brick road. Also, in the same scene showing the brick road, Barbie happens to be driving past a rainbow. The rainbow could be a subtle nod to the theme song of ‘Wizard of Oz’, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

There’s No Place Like Barbie Land?

Is the upcoming movie a spin-off of Dorothy’s journey? The answer is still up in the air, but TikTok user Cat Quinn has high hopes that Barbie would go on a path of self-discovery, meet new people in a new place, and realize there’s something amiss going on.

Fans are also quick to point out that the pair of glittery pink high heels Barbie wears are not unlike the ruby red slipper Dorothy uses to return home. In addition, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene, Barbie drives by a movie theater that shows a ‘Wizard of Oz’ poster, complete with pictures of Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. All the references to Oz in the trailer left fans wondering if everything is purely coincidental or if the clues indeed reveal what the movie’s story line is going to be like.
