Meta Plans Huge Layoffs: 3,600 Jobs On The Line
February 11, 2025 — Meta plans to make way for AI engineers by cutting 5% of its staff during mass layoffs.
On Feb 10th, Meta Platforms began its new round of layoffs, after previously announcing its plans for targeted staff reductions.
Internal company memos obtained by Reuters indicate that about 5% of the company’s workforce would be cut. These layoffs will likely affect about 3,600 employees worldwide, reports Forbes. Only staff from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and France are momentarily exempt due to local regulations. As reported by Reuters, company notices would be sent out to “lowest performers”, between Feb 11 and 18.
Parallel to these layoffs, Reuters reports that Meta plans to focus on expedited hiring of machine learning engineers. This decision reflects Meta’s growing focus on AI. Forbes reported that Mark Zuckerberg stated the following in his internal communications: “AI, glasses as the next computing platform and the future of social media”, motivating his interest in the technology.
Microsoft had also announced it would be making similar staff changes. With the tech giants Meta and Microsoft being trendsetters in the field, it is very likely that a shift in the tech industry is on the horizon. According to Forbes, it is highly likely that other tech companies will soon follow suit, hiring in machine learning and engineering roles.
