How did she manage the separation? Shakira opened up about her emotional journey following the couple’s split.

As HOLR mentions here, Shakira and Gerard Piqué officially separated last year, after the singer caught her now ex-partner cheating on her.

In a recent interview, Shakira opened up about her emotional journey after the heartbreak caused by the separation. She ended her 11-year relationship with the soccer player last year, as PEOPLE writes in this article. The interview was originally conducted in Spanish, but the outlet provided an English translation of Shakira’s latest statements.

Here’s what we know:

The singer, 46, confessed that she has ”always been emotionally dependent [on men]” and talked about the experience of being on her own after a long-term relationship. “One way or another, I’ve managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I’ll be fine on my own,” the singer told the interviewer in the article. “I’ve always been very emotionally dependent [on men] – I have to confess this. I was in love with love,” she added. “When a woman has to face [hardships] in life, she comes out stronger. When you come out stronger it means you’re learning to recognize your weaknesses and accept your vulnerability,” Shakira continued.

The singer talked about her and Piqué’s children and recalled feeling stronger after a heartbreaking event like the split. “I feel complete — because I feel like I can depend on myself and I have two kids who depend on me,” she said. “I have to be stronger than a lion. That strength, in order for it to be real and not a façade… it needs to be the result of a great pain. Accepting that pain and tolerating the frustration because there are things in life that don’t turn out the way we want them to,” she stated.
