Why is “Wait in the Truck” controversy trending? HOLR breaks it down, below.

HARDY’s song “wait in the truck” featuring Lainey Wilson sparked controversy online after Reddit users found the song to be “toxic.”

Wait In The Truck

Although the song is not based on a true story, it’s seemingly about “domestic violence and the vigilante justice that follows” as outlined in this article. When talking to a publication called The Tennessean, Wilson had this to say about the song and its apparent message:

“The topic isn’t talked about a lot; these are things that [often] happen behind closed doors. This one is going to start a conversation that a lot of people don’t want to have, but it is our job as artists to sing about things that people are [sometimes] scared to talk about.”

Wait In The Truck Lyrics

The lyrics tell a tale of a man finding a battered woman and seeking justice by finding and attacking her abuser, which subsequently gets him arrested. Here are some of the lyrics from the song, below:

Working my way through a middle-of-June / Midnight thunderstorm / There was something in the headlights / It stopped me on a dime / Well, she was scared to death, so I said / “Climb in”, and in she climbed/

The song received mixed reviews on various social platforms, but Reddit users took to the platform to discuss the meaning behind the song and why it is allegedly “toxic” in this trending thread. Here’s what some Reddit users had to say about the viral song:

“So, I came here to say- as a woman and a domestic violence survivor, I HATE this song. This guy, is not a hero or an angel. He completely takes away her agency and her power – “I didn’t ask her any questions… I just put it in drive…” This is just another angry, violent man. That would have terrified me,” said one user.

“I agree. I am also a survivor of domestic abuse. I was hoping maybe he would help her seek justice by contacting the police and being a witness,” confirmed another.

“Thanks for sharing. The song always rubbed me the wrong way and perhaps it has a lot to do with what you’re saying,” said another user.
