What happened in the Carroll V Trump case?

According to this TikTok video posted by user @cnn, Donald Trump has been ordered by a jury to pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 M in the latest verdict from the defamation trial.

As noted in the video, it was determined that Carroll was “injured” as a result of Trump’s defamatory statements.

For emotional harm, she was awarded $7.3 M.

For reputational repair, she was awarded $11 M.

For punitive damages, she was awarded $65 M. This is over $80 M Carroll was awarded by the jury. Last year, the jury ordered her $5 M as the video claims.

What did Trump say about Carroll? 

The trial reportedly began when Carroll filed two defamation lawsuits against Trump following comments he made in 2019 and 2022 that seemingly ruined her reputation. Carroll had accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in the mid-90s as noted here. However, Trump denied these accusations and called Carroll a “whack job” in the process. He also alleged that he had never met her. He reportedly continued to deny claims in public.
