Tell us about how you got your start in the industry.

I kind of fell into it by accident. When I was 13 I went to a specialist school and did interviews for my school newspaper. Doing interviews and talking to people was my big fear I was trying to accomplish because I grew up with processing issues my entire life. I fell in love with interviewing at 13, and I had the opportunity to interview Jordan Fisher, and it was my first real interview.

It was the first time I felt like I was actually good at something and could contribute to something. From there, I started doing more interviews and it became not only my hobby and passion but my job- which has been amazing!

You’re the host of iHeart Radio’s podcast “Let’s Be Real with Sammy Jaye”. Talk to us about this experience.

I came up with the podcast when I was a sophomore in high school. I had always had anxiety and OCD, but it was at the worst it’s ever been then. As an anxious girly, distraction is always my go-to so I started listening to podcasts. I wanted to hear from people I looked up to having unfiltered, down-to-earth conversations about what they were actually going through.

That was the initial idea for it. Julia Michaels was part of my pilot episode and she wrote the song Anxiety with Selena Gomez, which was very helpful for me during that time. Here we are 4 seasons later and I continue to have down-to-earth, unfiltered conversations and learn so much from every one of them.

What is “Let’s Be Real” all about and who have been some of your favourite guests to chat with to date?

The goal is to have unfiltered and down-to-earth conversations but what’s so much fun is the diverse group of guests we’ve had. We’ve had athletes like Kevin Love, and artists like Kesha. We also had an astrophysicist on our podcast! We’ve had incredible actors and actresses as well.

Overall, we’ve had such a fun variety of guests and entrepreneurs and I’ve learned so much over the past couple of months.

Season 4 of the podcast recently kicked off with some exciting guests. So, what can listeners expect when tuning in?

I hope if anyone listens they find it refreshing- I hope that’s the biggest takeaway! In terms of this season, one of my favourite episodes is with Dulé Hill who is an incredible tap dancer and producer. I am the biggest fan of psych so that episode and conversation were so much fun!

How do you hope your podcast “Let’s Be Real” inspires listeners?

I hope people continue to have these conversations in their day-to-day lives. I noticed that there is a ripple effect when you’re honest and it’s a domino effect- if you open up they’ll do the same and it’s really beautiful to see that. I hope that this podcast is a moment for people to be distracted and learn something or gain a different perspective they didn’t have before.
