Two Songs In The Little Mermaid Live-Action Will Be Modified To Include Consent

With the new Little Mermaid Live-Action film coming to theatres very soon, more trailers and details are finding their way online.

In this new report, it seems that some lyrics are going to be changed to two songs.

Kiss The Girl and Poor Unfortunate Souls.

Kiss The Girl Lyrics Changes

For the song, ‘Kiss The Girl’, the lyrics are being changed in order to include consent.

In the original film, the song is featured in the scene where Princess Ariel and Prince Eric are in a boat surrounded by all the fish, birds and the side character Sebastian the crab.

“She don’t say a wordAnd she won’t say a wordUntil you kiss the girl”

Some believe that the lyrics are implying that Prince Eric should ‘force himself’ onto Ariel, which is why the lyrics are set to change in order to add consent to the song/plot.

Poor Unfortunate Souls

For Poor Unfortunate Souls, the lyrics are being changed due to the idea of girls being told to filter what they say and stand down when it comes to using their voices.

The original composer of the 1989 original Little Mermaid film did an interview with Variety.

“We have some revisions in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ regarding lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn, even though Ursula is clearly manipulating Ariel to give up her voice.”

The original lyrics are;

“The men up there don’t like a lot of blabberThey think a girl who gossips is a bore!Yet on land it’s much prefered for ladies not to say a wordAnd after all dear, what is idle babble for?”

The context of this song is Ursulas’ lair. In the scene, we see Ursula trying to manipulate Ariel to give her her voice in exchange for her legs.

The film is set to hit theatres on May 26th, 2023.
