In the new trailer for Maria, Angelina Jolie takes on the role of the famous opera singer Maria Callas in a biopic directed by Pablo Larraín.

Jolie, 49, portrays the late soprano, who is shown in the trailer as having a glamorous yet difficult life.

Larraín, a Chilean filmmaker, is known for directing films that center on influential and iconic female figures in history.

Larraín previously directed films “Jackie” in 2016 and “Spencer” in 2021, which makes “Maria” his third biopic.

The film follows Callas as she moves to Paris, reflecting on her life and career after years in the spotlight.

The official synopsis highlights her struggles during this time, offering a look at the woman behind the public image.

Maria received an eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.

According to Variety, Jolie admitted that learning opera for the role was a big challenge.

“It wasn’t easy, but I had a great director who understood opera and put together a team to help me,” Jolie said.

Jolie also shared that she welcomed the challenge.

“Maria’s music was intimidating, but sometimes being scared is a good thing. As an artist, it pushes you.”

“Maria” will premiere in theaters on November 27 and be available to stream on Netflix starting December 11.

Jolie’s last serious film to be released was “The Tourist” in 2010, starring alongside Johnny Depp.
