The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has left residents and eyewitnesses in shock, with many describing the event as feeling like an earthquake. The bridge, which is 1,200 feet long, broke into pieces and fell into the Patapsco River after being struck by a container ship named Dali.

Priscilla Thompson, who lives near the bridge, recounted the terrifying moment, stating that it shook her house so badly that she initially thought it was an earthquake. She described how the shaking lasted for four or five seconds and then everything went eerily quiet.

Donald Heinbuch, a retired fire chief, compared the impact to rolling thunder or an earthquake. He mentioned that his home shook during the collapse, further adding to the chaotic atmosphere.

John Flansburg, another resident, shared his experience of hearing a loud bang and then witnessing the devastation outside his door. He described the aftermath as a scene of destruction, with debris scattered and vehicles affected by the collapse.

Eyewitnesses captured the chaos on video. One individual named Bobby Gattus expressing disbelief as he saw the bridge collapsing. In a video posted online, Gattus exclaimed, “The bridge is gone. Holy hell,” illustrating the shock and astonishment felt by many.

The container ship Dali struck a support pier of the bridge around 1:30 a.m., leading to the catastrophic collapse. The suddenness of the event left residents and officials stunned, with many expressing disbelief at how quickly the solid concrete bridge came down.

Jim Fischer, who helped build the bridge in the 1970s, shared his disbelief at the collapse, stating, “I never thought in a million years anything like this could happen.” He was struck by the speed at which the bridge disintegrated, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the tragedy.

The eyewitnesses and residents grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event. As investigations into the cause of the collapse continue, the impact of this tragedy will be felt for a long time to come.
