President Biden recently signed a law that would lead to banning TikTok unless it is sold within a year. What does this mean?

According to this TikTok video posted by user @theoneprouddad, Biden has signed a law that includes a potential ban on the popular social media video platform, TikTok. TikTok is Chinese-owned, as noted here.

However, the TikToker goes on to explain that Biden signing this law does not guarantee a ban. It forces TikToker’s parent company to sell the app and gives them 9 months to do so- with a 3-month extension. If they don’t manage to sell it within this time frame, the app could be banned in the US. As the TikToker goes on to further detail, although a TikTok ban could happen eventually, nothing would happen or impact the platform for approximately 9-12 months.

People have taken to other discussion platforms such as Reddit to discuss the latest developments in this, stating that the platform has a year to sell and if this does not happen by then that TikTok may be banned. As a result, the app will not be impacted right away, but this does not mean that it can’t be banned in the future.

According to this article, claims that the Chinese government could use TikTok to spy on Americans have led to this as it has been alleged that TikTok is a threat to national security.
