A Billboard reporter said to Sawai, “Well guess who just said she’s a huge fan?”
In which Sawai placed her hand on her chest and said to Bates, “Oh my gosh.”
Bates said to Sawai, “Good luck tonight. You’re wonderful. The show is wonderful. You’re magnificent, just beautiful.”
Sawai replied, “You’re going to make me cry.”
Sawai broke down in tears and proceeded to embrace Bates in a hug.
Sawai said, “Receiving that from you means a lot. Thank you so much.”
Bates replied, “So subtle, just beautiful. Exquisite work. Congratulations.”
Anna Sawai Makes Emmy History
On September 15th, Sawai won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series for her role in FX’s series “Shogun,” making her the first actor of Asian descent to ever win in the category.

When Viola Davis announced Sawai as the winner, Sawai broke down in tears as the crowd cheered.
“I was crying before my name was announced, I’m a mess today. Thank you to the Academy for naming me alongside my fellow nominees whose work I grew up watching and love,” Sawai said.
“Thank you to John Landgraf and the whole FX team for believing in our story,” Sawai continued.
“Thank you, Justin and Rachel, for believing in me and giving me this role of a lifetime. Thank you to every single one of the crew and the cast led by Hero. He really opens doors and continues to open doors for people like me,” Sawai said.

“Cosmo, you are the most honest and truthful and no BS actor I know, and you made me give my 120 per cent,” Sawai continued.
“Lastly, thank you to my team and my family. Mom, I love you. You are the reason I am here. You showed me stoicism and that’s how I was able to portray Mariko. This is to all the women who expect nothing and continue to be an example for everyone. Thank you so much,” Sawai said.
