The past winners have had long hair but Gilles has seemingly changed the game with her short haircut. “We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair,” said Gilles, as outlined in the article.

In fact, Gilles felt forced to defend her look following her win as shown below-

The beauty pageant has since garnered backlash since Gilles’ crowning after it was alleged that it had gone “woke” following the decision. People online believed that Gilles’ look was “androgynous.” “No one should dictate who you are… every woman is different, we’re all unique,” said Gilles when it came to defending herself.

In fact, a spokesperson for the Miss Universe pageant also took to People Magazine to defend Gilles in a recent statement (here):

“There is no one way to be Miss Universe or Miss France, and we embrace every look that comes across our stage. We represent the times, and being your confident unique self is the one thing we see being reflected in all of our winners,” the statement read.
