This past Sunday’s Academy Awards saw Oppenheimer dominate. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, won seven awards, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.

The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, portrays how J. Robert Oppenheimer led the team that developed the atomic bomb during World War II. Since its premiere, Oppenheimer has received widespread acclaim, gaining prestigious awards at the SAGs, BAFTAs, and now the Academy Awards. Alongside Cillian Murphy stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh.

Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, favored to win for Best Actor, took home the award on Sunday. Murphy is now the first Irish-born actor to win the award. Taking the stage, Murphy expressed his gratitude to his Oppenheimer castmates and crew during his speech.

The actor was nominated alongside Maestro star and director Bradley Cooper, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Colman Domingo in Rustin, and Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction.

“I’m a very proud Irish man standing here tonight,” The actor exclaimed. Murphy ended his speech by saying thank you in Irish, “Go raibh míle maith agaibh,”

Robert Downey Jr. Christopher Nolan

Murphy’s co-star Robert Downey Jr. received his first Oscar, in the supporting actor category, for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss, commissioner of the Atomic Energy Commission, the agency responsible for overseeing the Manhattan Project. Strauss is known for orchestrating the downfall of Oppenheimer, including establishing a kangaroo court that ultimately led to the stripping of Oppenheimer’s security clearance.

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan received the Best Director award. During his speech, he expressed his thanks to the Academy members.

“[W]e don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here,” the English director said about the film industry, “but to know that you think that I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”

Oscars Best Picture

The film won its final award of the night: the prestigious Best Picture. In addition to these, Oppenheimer also won for original score, film editing, and cinematography.
