The Met or Met Gala is an event that is hosted on the first Monday of May, and since we, unfortunately, didn’t get one last year, we are going to look back at the years with the best and most iconic looks.

The Gala is a fundraiser that supports the costume institute at the Met which celebrates the opening of that year’s institute, which is usually a specific topic or era of fashion. The last few years have been some of the most eclectic and outrageous exhibits yet, like Age of Technology, Heavenly Bodies, and of course our last event, Camp: Notes on Fashion.

In 1974 Cher wore Bob Mackie, a skin bodysuit with glitter and gems accented with boa feathers at her hands and ankles. The theme was Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design.

In 1995, Naomi Campbell wore Versace, a strapless column cut dress that just dazzled with the number of gems and jewels on it. The theme was Haute Couture.

1996, Donatella and Gianni Versace, classic black leather and gold accents which were designed by themselves, the theme Christian Dior.

2014, Rihanna in Stella McCartney, white two-piece, long sleeve high neck with diamonds, and a mermaid cut skirt, the theme beyond fashion.

2016, Age of Technology, Zoe Kravitz in Valentino, black wrap dress with lace face mask/crown. Beyonce in Givenchy, wearing a peach latex dress with puff sleeves and small pearl accents.

2017, Comme des Garcons, Dakota Johnson in custom Gucci alongside Alessandro Michele (creative director of Gucci) as her date. Zayn Malik wears a classic black suit, with metal sleeves, created by Versace, alongside date Gigi Hadid.

Katy Perry, Katy takes up 3 years of the Met Gala where she did not disappoint. In 2017, (as a co-chair) she wore John Galliano, a red tulle dress with a headpiece. In 2018, wearing Jamie Mizrahi, for Heavenly Bodies, Katy showed up with a gold dress and 8-foot angel wings. In 2019, Camp Katy wore 2 absolutely iconic outfits. For the red carpet she showed up as a functioning chandelier, and during the dinner, she changed into a hamburger, both designed by Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott.

2019, Camp: Notes on Fashion, is all about the most outrageous looks, just like Katy Perry’s. As a first-time attendee and co-chair Harry Styles showed up in custom Gucci. With a see-through tulle top, which was a high neck and long sleeve, and black trousers that rose just below his chest showed off most of his incredible tattoos. Ezra Miller, a man of many eclectic outfits, Showed up with many eyes on him (no pun intended), in custom Burberry, a pinstripe suit with a jewelled corset.

As the hopes of seeing outfits like these again, it is rumoured that 2021/2022 Met Gala theme is InAmerica, an event that is guaranteed to spark a lot of amazing and outrageous outfits.
