In the wake of many analyses of the political divide in the United States, a new movie portrays a “dystopian future America” in the grips of another civil war.
Directed and written by Alex Garland, Civil War portrays a team of journalists traveling from New York City to Washington D.C. to interview the President of the United States. Kirsten Dunst, known for her roles in Interview with a Vampire and the Spiderman franchise, leads the 4-person team. The other journalists are portrayed by Wagner Moura, of Narcos fame, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Nick Offerman plays the president.
As seen in the trailer, along their travels, the journalists encounter people who seem to be oblivious to the ongoing conflict, and people actively participating in it. The group has to navigate the political and violent conflicts to reach the White House before rebel forces.
The political divides are apparent in one scene in the trailer, with Wagner Moura speaking to a militia member—played by Jesse Plemons—who is holding the group at gunpoint.
“We’re American, okay?” Moura’s character says.
Plemons character scratches his face, firearm in his other hand as he asks, “[w]hat kind of American” they are.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the cast of Civil War reflected on what the film meant to them and why they think it’s so important.
“It’s a film about the product of polarization and division,” Garland said to Ben Mankiewicz.
Offerman, who plays a president in his third term and abolished the FBI, said he thinks the American “ego” and “history wants to allow us to believe that we’re above such things [as civil war]”
“[W]e’re immune to such things,” he finished.
“Unless we come to our senses,” Garland added, “our polarized, divisive, noncommunicative, accusatory state is going to continue. Unless we do something about it,”
