The latest trend that’s already in your closet!

The year is 2019, it’s a Friday night in Toronto. It’s finally summer and people are trading their long sleeves for tank tops and boots for sandals. My friend messages me that we are going to Love Child and that they’ve already started pre-drinking, I’m late. I open my closet, and like most, I have clothes but nothing to wear. I’ve been hidden away in sweatpants and hoodies and now all I want to do is wear a tiny top and tight pants but, I can’t find the right top. Until, from the corner of my eye I see a bikini top, black, strappy, sports braesque, perfect.

That was a really long way of saying I wore a bikini top to the club but, I promise there is a point. People have been getting very creative with their bikini tops, wearing them every which way. A 2020 Kardashian/Jenner approved trend as we watched the girls tie their tops upside down, crisscrossed and sideways but, the Kar/Jenner’s have gotten bored of it and so have we.

2021’s newest bikini top trend is to simply wear it in place of a top. A sweat-proof trend that doesn’t have you tangled in a knot. I will admit, this isn’t a necessarily new trend but it’s having a resurgence and we’re not mad about it. For a trendy and comfortable summer outfit, style your bikini top with a button-up and your favourite vintage denim.

Dua Lipa posted to Instagram on June 10th in a red bikini top styled with a matching red gingham Miu Miu blouse jacket. She completed the look with denim cut-off shorts, a chunky buckle belt, the Burberry Olympia bag, silver Bea Bongiasca earrings and a variety of chunky rings.

On June 6th Sophie Turner took a more casual approach to the trend, styling her striped bikini top with a Louis Vuitton jacket and shorts and the Casetify cottage core case.

It’s 2021, winter is over and even the warmest parts of the world are ready to trade their sweatpants for, well anything other than sweatpants. As Toronto starts to open back up and you find yourself rummaging through your closet for the perfect tiny top ask yourself if the perfect tiny top isn’t a top at all but a tiny bikini.
