In the U.S., politics and celebrities seem to go together like gin and tonic. Back in April, Caitlyn Jenner announced that she was running for California governor, a position held by none other than Austrian bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2003 to 2011. The latest Hollywood-heavyweight to entertain the idea of a stint in politics has been Texas native and all-around cool guy, Matthew McConaughey.

For months McConaughey has been toying around with the idea of running for Texas governor, back in March on an episode of the podcast “The Balanced Voice”, he told host Raina Mankarious that running for governor of Taxes was “a true consideration”. It seems that this consideration has taken on a more serious form, with the 51-year old actor reportedly getting in touch with some influential people within the state’s political realm testing the waters. In a report from Politico, McConaughey has been in contact with a “deep-pocketed moderate Republican and energy CEO” gathering information on how a run at governor would be perceived, according to multiple people familiar with the conversations. It is unclear at this point whether the actor would be running as a republican or democrat, or what his key issues would be.

The notion of McConaughey running for governor has been dismissed by many as simply eye-grabbing headlines, but it turns out that the actor would have a very real possibility of being elected. In a poll conducted during April 6-13 by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, 45% of registered voters would vote for the Uvalde-born actor from a total of 1,126 surveyed voters. McConaughey has never been one to shy away from leadership, since 1993 he has run a non-profit organization called the “Just Keep Living Foundation” that focuses on providing high-school students the tools to live active lives and set themselves up for a successful future. Whether or not Matthew McConaughey has the skill necessary to be an effective governor of state has yet to be decided, but it is evident that he is interested in the position.
