Ryan Evans shares a sweet kiss with a new character

In the fourth and final season of the Disney+ series, Lucas Grabeel rejoins the High School Musical series. In the High School Musical spinoff Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Lucas Grabeel’s character Ryan Evans is breaking free! Things have changed a lot since Ryan has attended East High School and we are all for it! During a preview of HSMTMTS‘ swan song, Evans kisses a mysterious man and thanks him for coming to watch his performance alongside old classmates Martha Cox (Kaycee Stroh), Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman), and Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu).

Before the new character shares a kiss with Evans backstage, he says “You look amazing, this is so cool!”  Evans replies, “This means so much to me that you are here.” Ryan’s man responds with “I love you” prior to their kiss. Ryan Evans has finally found what he was looking for! Evans’ sexuality has always been up in the air but it is finally confirmed that he is indeed gay. Back in 2006, Grabreel even recalled asking Ortega if Evans was gay. “I came up to Kenny one day and was like, ‘Hey, so can we talk about the character for a second? Ryan’s gay, right?’” Grabreel said.

The High School Musical director Kenny Ortega had previously mentioned the audience in 2006 would not be able to handle Ryan Evans’ gay sexuality but the character was always intended to be gay. In 2020, Ortega told Variety, “I was concerned because it was family and kids, that Disney might not be ready to cross that line and move into that territory yet. It was less about coming out. [It is] just more about letting his true colors come forward.”
